Effects of Obesity on Lifestlye

Research has shown that there has been
www.myoverweightchild.com/self-esteem.html
Says that children who are obese have low self-esteem, however, it doesnt make them depressed

www.medindia.net
This site showed that the effects of obesity are, diabetes, high BP, CVD, also, they suffer emotionally and they show withdrawal symptoms.

www.buzzle.com/articles/obesity-teens-new-study-assess-advisability-bariatric-surgery.html
Here, they are suggesting that more people are now needing surgery dur to obesity. And prehaps it shall be better that the surgery was carried out sooner, rather than later, in order to save more lives.

www.growingkids.co.uk/ObesityInTeens.html
'Obese teens are facingh a health time bomb', says that more teenagers than ever are now suffering from obesity, and the main causes being :too diet, too much fatty food, sugary and high calorie intake, along with lack of exercise, leading to low self-esteem, bullying, loneliness, lack of condifence, and nedative self image.

Basic overview

Statistics
We decide to foucus on females as the statistics show that 16-21 year old femals have a higher rates of obisety. We are going to focus on the older bracket of teenagers as at the moment its only mainly foucused on children and adults and dosn't target this group. This group also has shown to have greater social impact (image, friends, social life) so we are goign to use this as part of our campain to tackle obesity.
Poster
The second poster we analysed we thought was effective and attention grabbing because of its shock tactics and it shows the risk involved in unhealthy and over eating.
Leaflet
The leaflets we anaylsed we didn't like because they were too bulky in information and we want ours to be more simple so teenagers will want to read it as they wont read loads of writing. The leaflets also only looked at one aspect of causes of obesity (tv) we want to have a bigger overview so it can target all people. We want a more generalised view.
Website
We liked the NHS website because it had more detail and went into it more and didnt just outline them. We would liek to do this on our website as our poster or leflet will grab peoples attention and then they will go onto our website to tell you more detail and not just tell them what we already know. i.e we would inclue more detial on how obesity effects you and your body not just that its bad for you and go into other peoples stories on how it affected tehir life. we will also put on a chat room so peole can discuss their problems, share their stories, and give tips.

Statistics

This graph shows that obesity rates have risen and in teenagers its higher in females. So we can aim our campain more towards females.
Theres also a large quantity of numerical data on teh nhs website (www.Nhs.com) however most of this data is unsuitble for our project because people wont be interested in reading numerical tables and it is hard to understand.

Website research

http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Obesity/Pages/Introduction.aspx
This is good, it has all the information needed. I like that it has tabs to different parts of the problem, the links to other pages and the "real stories" to give fat people hope. The BMI calculator is also good, it allows people to see whether or not they have a problem.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/obesity.htm
This seems to be more focussed on helping people lose weight. The opportunity to ask a doctor about it is good, and the forums mean people don't feel alone and they know others are in the same situation. The support groups are good as well.

http://www.nationalobesityforum.org.uk/
Not that great, it's more about raising awareness than actually doing anything in particular. The only good thing is that there are links to talk to medical professionals. Not good to base anything upon, they seem more about being a commercial group rather than trying to help anyone.

http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publichealth/Healthimprovement/Obesity/index.htm
Not much in the way of information or solutions, just seems to explain what obesity is. However, there are some good links on the page.

We should use: Links to other websites, option to contact a professional, advice on things like pills/supplements, suggested ways to lose weight (e.g. specific sports, healthy foods, how to stop oneself from snacking), pictures of fat people exercising however grim it may look.

Poster Research

Referance - www.notgointokillyou.ca Is aimed at all teenagers and is quite comical to catch the younger teens attention so they find it interesting. Although this poster don't say alot about obesity or even mention it and may be misleading. It is also done in canada and may not relate to the uk.

Referance - http://www.self.com/. - a hand pouring soda that turns into fat. Its very effective and is a turn of from these sort of drinks; but is from the USA so may not be able to be generalised. It only would really target the older group of teenagers as its not very catchy for the younger gorups (13-15year olds - and they may not be as aware of the fact).

Leaflet research

www.youngmedia.org.au/pdf/TT_pbrochure.pdf

I don't like the style of this leaflet- it doesn't give enough information. It is also Australian which means we can't generalise this to the UK. It only focuses on TV as the cause and there are many other factors so is biased.

www.nhs.uk/change4life/Documents/pdf/Help_stop_childhood_obesity.pdf
This one only looks at people under 16, so not all the information will be valid as teenagers are 13-16 as "children" so data won't be specific to them. The leaflet is good as it looks at tackling the problem although I think it would be best to keep our leaflet short but rich in useful information. I think the leaflet is more inclined towards the solution rather than outling causes and the problem, so i'd like to make our leaflet more balanced.

I will look for more examples tomorrow at college. =]
